Community outreach made easy, with OdourRadar.

Including OdourRadar in your community engagement strategy comes with a host of benefits that go far beyond helping to ensure odour complaints are acted upon and seen to be treated with due regard.

OdourRadar is a community-powered odour reporting tool that makes it straightforward for residents to report nuisance smells. It captures the who, what, when and where of every community odour event, and users can set a radius of influence around their site to receive relevant reports directly in PlumeMapper. Each report contributes to a growing picture that helps industry, local authorities and environmental teams identify odour sources and respond to odour nuisance.

Take control of the evidence

It is often the case that when regulators or council representatives first knock on a business's door, there might not have been any awareness of odour complaints originating within the local community, or at least of how many complaints. Unfortunately, it is frequently found that the complaint data that triggered the visit might be vague, incomplete, and not very geographically enlightening.

When you offer OdourRadar as a service to the community you take control of the odour reports. Capturing those reports turns data into evidence that can be compared with weather, operations and field observations. These data contain real considerations for understanding odour plumes and the events that may have led to or contributed to odour releases. They may reveal defensible evidence that points to another odour emitter.

What makes a useful report

A useful community report contains four elements: when, where, what and the effect. When reporting an odour event in OdourRadar, community members are asked to be specific about the date, time and duration, location, and receptor context - such as the odour character, intensity and offensiveness; and the reported effect on amenity or behaviour.

Along with each report, the prevailing meteorological conditions at the time of the event are also recorded. This includes parameters such as wind speed and direction, temperature, and other relevant conditions, providing important context for interpreting where an odour may have originated and how it may have travelled.

Real-time data in PlumeMapper

OdourRadar has the added benefit of delivering real-time data to your PlumeMapper dataset that can be instantly reviewed and investigated instead of trying to decipher and analyse an oversized block of data from local council or environment regulators.

OdourRadar integration

Build trust with your community

Offering your local community an easy reporting tool that can be utilised in seconds from a mobile device or computer represents a clear PR win. This transparency in your odour management processes demonstrates to the community that their concerns are received, logged, investigated and interpreted rather than disappearing into a black hole.

This has a marked influence on trust and respect for your organisation and its efforts to manage odour emissions.

The longer-term benefit is also valuable - with greater detail available to your odour management strategy and a better understanding of the areas where your interventions will be most impactful.
